Role Summary

The Player Development Advisor brings the credibility, perspective, and network of a former professional athlete to the Foundation's summer program. This is not a passive advisory role — the Advisor is actively engaged with the program's curriculum, the students it serves, and the partnerships it depends on. Students in this program are at an age when a conversation with someone who has lived the athletic journey at the highest level changes something in how they see themselves. This role is fulfilled as part of board service.

Core Responsibilities

1Player Development Coordinator Oversight

  • Provide regular guidance to the Player Development Coordinator — reviewing session frameworks, offering input on curriculum, and advising on how program activities connect to real athletic and professional development
  • Check in with the Coordinator at least once per week during the program delivery phase
  • Help the Coordinator understand how to work effectively with coaches, trainers, and student-athletes
  • Advise on the structure and format of student activities so they feel relevant, challenging, and authentic

2Student Workshops

  • Lead one to two workshops directly with the student cohort during the program cycle
  • Topics may include: professional athletic preparation, handling adversity, athletic discipline and career readiness, or what athletes wish they had known earlier
  • Work with the Executive Director and Coordinator in advance to align workshop content with weekly themes
  • Bring personal stories, honest reflection, and direct engagement

3Guest Speaker and Partnership Development

  • Leverage personal and professional network to identify and connect the program with guest speakers
  • Introduce the program to former teammates, colleagues, coaches, agents, or industry contacts
  • Help identify and approach employers and community leaders for Week 6 career site visits in Birmingham and Montgomery
  • Support the Foundation in building partnerships that create access for students

4Board Engagement

  • Participate in Foundation board meetings and contribute perspective on youth development direction
  • Help articulate the program's value to prospective partners, funders, and community stakeholders
  • Serve as a visible and credible representative of the Foundation's mission in the Birmingham and Montgomery community

Qualifications

Required

  • Competed at the professional level in any sport with direct experience of what preparation and performance look like from the inside
  • Connected to the Birmingham or Montgomery community — either by roots, by relationships, or by a specific investment in the region's youth
  • Communicates naturally and honestly with young people without needing to perform or impress
  • Has a network that includes athletes, agents, coaches, business professionals, or community leaders
  • Committed to the Foundation's mission as a board member

What the Foundation Provides

  • Full program context and onboarding before the summer begins
  • Direct access to the Executive Director and program leadership throughout the cycle
  • Flexibility in how the advisory relationship is structured — phone, text, or in person
  • A clear picture each week of how the program is progressing
  • Recognition and acknowledgment of the Advisor's contribution across program communications and at the final showcase
