Family Support & Engagement

Strengthening the systems that help organizations engage and support families in real time.

Overview

The Hattie E. Evans Family Foundation works alongside youth-serving organizations to strengthen how they engage families across programs, schools, and community settings. Current work is concentrated in Birmingham and Montgomery through out-of-school time partnerships, where consistent family engagement directly affects attendance, retention, and overall program stability.

Our role centers on helping organizations operationalize family engagement. This includes how staff identify needs, communicate with caregivers, and connect families to resources in a coordinated way across multiple partners.

What We Are Working On

Across current ASAP-funded programs and partner sites, the foundation is supporting:

  • Integration of family engagement practices into daily program operations
  • Staff training on identifying early signs of disengagement or instability
  • Standardized communication approaches across multiple program sites
  • Shared documentation of family interactions through Continuum Nexus

This work is embedded within active program delivery, allowing partners to test and refine approaches in real conditions rather than through isolated pilots.

Core Initiatives

Active work supporting partner organizations in strengthening family engagement.

Family Engagement Systems in Out-of-School Time Programs

We are supporting OST providers in Birmingham and Montgomery to build consistent, site-level practices that improve caregiver communication and participation.

This includes:

  • Daily and weekly caregiver touchpoint structures
  • Attendance-based follow-up protocols
  • Documentation of family interactions tied to student engagement
  • Alignment between program staff, site coordinators, and leadership

Early Identification and Response Framework

Programs often recognize challenges after participation declines. We are helping partners shift toward earlier identification through structured observation and documentation.

This includes:

  • Training staff to track behavioral, attendance, and engagement signals
  • Establishing internal escalation and response protocols
  • Coordinating responses across program teams and external partners

Resource Navigation and Referral Pathways

Rather than building standalone case management, we are helping organizations create clear pathways for connecting families to existing resources.

This includes:

  • Mapping local service providers in Birmingham and Montgomery
  • Building referral workflows that staff can use consistently
  • Tracking referrals and follow-up through shared systems

How This Connects to Our Broader Work

Family engagement is integrated with our ecosystem and data work. Information collected at the program level informs:

  • Cross-partner coordination through Continuum Nexus
  • Identification of system-level gaps in services
  • Alignment between schools, OST providers, and community organizations

Why This Matters

Family engagement directly influences whether young people remain connected to programs and opportunities. When organizations have consistent systems for communication, early response, and coordination, participation stabilizes and outcomes improve across multiple areas.
